Walk-In Showers & Wetrooms in Auckland

No tray, no glass screen, fully tiled and waterproofed. The modern Auckland shower — frameless, accessible, easy to clean, and the right call for ensuite design in 2026.

The Auckland Wetroom Brief

A fully-tiled shower with no edges to hide.

The acrylic shower tray with the swing-out glass screen is the most-dated thing in any 1990s or 2000s Auckland bathroom. It looks cheap, it leaks at the silicone joint every few years, and it’s the first thing buyers walk past and decide the bathroom needs redoing.

A walk-in shower or wetroom replaces all of that with a single continuous waterproof surface — tile from wall to ceiling, gradient floor draining to a linear or tile-insert drain, frameless glass panel or no glass at all. The detail is in the gradient, the membrane, and the joinery between tile slabs — done right, it looks like a piece of architecture, not a plumbing fixture.

Walk-in showers are also the right design choice for accessibility — flat floor, no step, wheelchair-accessible if needed, easier to clean for older clients. They’re future-proof, they hold value at resale, and they make even a tight ensuite feel larger than it is.

FAQs

Questions Auckland homeowners actually ask.

What’s the difference between a walk-in shower and a wetroom?

A walk-in shower has a step-free entry but is still defined by a glass panel or partial enclosure separating the wet area from the dry bathroom. A wetroom takes it further — the whole bathroom floor is tanked and tiled, with the shower as one open zone, no glass barrier, water draining off the floor itself. Both share the same waterproofing approach.

How much does a walk-in shower cost in Auckland?

Walk-in showers and wetrooms in Auckland typically cost $18,000 to $50,000+ plus GST as a standalone build. A shower replacement runs $18K–$28K, mid-range wetroom $28K–$40K, and premium luxury wetrooms with marble feature walls and underfloor heating reach $40K–$60K+. See the full breakdown on our Auckland Renovation Costs Guide.

Will water spray out of a wetroom without a glass screen?

Not if it’s designed properly. A wetroom is laid out so the shower head sprays toward the wall, with the entry on the opposite side. The floor gradient pulls water to the drain, not the entry. Modern thermostatic mixers reduce splash, and the shower zone is far enough from the vanity and door that nothing gets wet outside the wet area.

Do I need building consent for a walk-in shower?

Usually not for a like-for-like shower replacement. You will need consent if you’re altering the floor framing (which most flat-floor wetrooms need to recess the floor for gradient), changing structural elements, or undertaking weathertightness work. Add Value Renovations manages the consent process when required.

How long does a walk-in shower or wetroom build take?

A walk-in shower replacement takes 10–14 working days on site, including waterproofing cure time and tiling. A full wetroom build runs 15–25 working days. Total project duration including design and procurement is 2–3 months.

Can a wetroom work in a tight bathroom?

Yes — wetrooms actually work best in tight bathrooms because they remove the visual barrier of a shower enclosure. A 4–5m² bathroom that feels cramped with a traditional shower tray feels twice the size as a wetroom. The minimum practical wetroom footprint is around 3.5m², though anything over 4m² is more comfortable.

How is a wetroom waterproofed?

Full membrane waterproofing across the entire floor and up the walls to at least 1.8m in the shower zone. We use Ardex or Mapei membrane systems, applied by a certified waterproofer, with an independent waterproofing certificate issued before tiling begins. The membrane is what stops the leak — the tile is decorative.

What does the Master Build 10-Year Guarantee cover for a wetroom?

The Master Build 10-Year Guarantee covers defects in materials and workmanship, structural defects for 10 years, and loss of deposit — including waterproofing failure. If the membrane fails within 10 years, the repair is covered. See the full guarantee details.

Open up the bathroom with a proper walk-in shower.

Whether it’s replacing a dated shower tray, building a full wetroom from scratch, or designing a luxury double-shower ensuite — we build walk-in showers that stay watertight and look right for the long run.
